Is This The End  Of GB Waterpolo

From the Secretary:

To : Members
Following the recent decision by UK Sport not to allocate any funds for the period 2009-2012 to GB Water polo until late January 2009 and at a reduced amount from the previous allocation (£3M), GB Water polo now faces a financial crisis.
Discussions have been taking place over this issue between various parties in England and a 'Friends of Water polo' lobbying group set-up.  More information and comments will follow.

Fantastic Fundraising Effort

The following has been received from Zach:

Today we raised a further £941 with our bag packing at M&S. Thanks go to all who helped today at any time. A special well done is also due to Andrew Woodall who helped the staff with the "Turkey Collection Service" all day and did a great job! Also big thanks to Beth, Caitlin, Grace, Gael and the Melvilles who travelled from a far to help us out!
This means that since Sunday with three bag packing days and the raffle the club has made a grand total of £2765. This should give the club the extra boost that it needs financially going into the New Year. A final thanks is due to Jeanette and Sylvia for organising the raffle once again this year.
We can all sit back and enjoy Christmas now! Thanks again.
Zach

I would just like to add that a HUGE thank you should go to Iain Thomson who has done a fantastic job in organising this fundraising and to everyone who has helped over the three days.

Message from Iain Thomson - Bagpackinig

Today's efforts at Tesco were great from all members of both DWPC and DASC. Overall we raised £1410 and that gives each club £705. Staff at Tesco were full of praise for all involved- both parents and swimmers.   At the end of the day lots of packers were beginning to wilt but it was still smiles all round.  Thanks again to all involved- hope to see polo players again tomorrow or Tuesday!
Thanks
Iain

Urgent Request from Fundraiser!

URGENT NEWS!!!!
We have just received a call asking us if we could bag pack on Tuesday 23rd of December at M&S because of a cancellation. This is the busiest day of the year and we urgently require helpers- we couldn’t possibly say no. Those who volunteer to pack for a large period of time through the day will have their lunch bought for them by the club. The day will start again at 9am and finish at 6pm.
We do realise that this would be potentially 3 days in a row for some people, however with the club in such an insecure financial state it is very important that we take all of the changes we get to pack. Your efforts will be rewarded!!
Thanks to all those who have already volunteered. How about spending another day???

Please contact Iain Thomson

Thanks to all

From the Secretary

Members / Parents,
Please note there is a development game on Sun 14th Dec from 5pm until 6.30pm (note earlier start time) at Carnegie Centre against a team from Hamilton . It is envisaged that all juniors will get some pool time with DWPC fielding two teams possibly. Can parents ensure their children are poolside for 4.45pm to allow us time to pick two teams.
As you are probably aware this is a busy time of the year for fundraising.  The club have excellent stocking fillers in the form of a Pen/Pencil set which are personalised to celebrate DWPC’s 25th anniversary year. These cost £5 with a £1 going to club funds. We have also distributed raffle tickets for our Xmas Hamper raffle for all members to sell. Can these be returned ASAP. There is a list on the poolside notice board requesting donations for the Hamper (must be Marks and Spencer) please pop in and put your name against an item so that we can fill up the hamper.
Finally we have secured two bag packing days on Sunday the 21st of December at Tesco, Duloch Park and at M&S in Dunfermline on Monday the 22nd of December. Please put these dates in your diary as this is the most important fundraiser of the year for the club. We will require volunteers to fill 2-3hr slots on each day in order to maximise our profits, further details and a rota will be circulated soon, please keep an eye on the website for these throughout the week; www.dunfermline-wpc.co.uk

Mixed Results From NWPL

GB Juniors weekend got off to a good start with GBJ1 beating Bristol 6-4 and GBJ2 beating Polytechnic 8-5. Andrew Woodall scored one of the goals.  Their luck ran out though on Sunday as they were beaten 10-7 by Cheltenham.  Unfortunately Portobello did not fair so well.  They were beaten 6-16 by Welsh Wanderer's and 15-11 by Invicta.

6 Dec 08

Funding for 2012 Olympics

Disappointing news from UK Sport re funding for the next four years to London 2012 with no funds currently allocated to Water polo following on from the £3.15m allocation for the previous period. It appears that twelve sports will have to share £12.5M in addition to any further funds that can be raised.  This may well have serious implications for the plans for GB at elite level.

But the great bonus from the fans' point of view is that group matches are to be played on a home and away basis, offering the opportunity to watch many of the world's top players in action in this country.  Provisional dates for GB's home matches are 14 April, 5 May and 12 May.

DWPC Beaten Again

DWPC were beaten for the second time in a week 10-20 by Portobello.  DWPC started off strongly with their starting seven and were level at the end of the first period.  Unfortunately this did not continue and they were always up against it, with Portobello proving too strong  for our younger players.  Goal scorers:  D Stewart 5, P Metcalfe 1, A Woodall 2, Calum Fraser 2.

DWPC have now completed all of their matches and are guaranteed to finish second in the league behind Portobello, the only team to beat them.

DWPC Lose 100% Record

DWPC were beaten tonight 18-8 by Portobello.  Due to exams, illness and injury only eight players were available which included three fourteen year olds (one a goalkeeper) so it was not a bad result considering Portobello were almost at full strength. It is a credit to the Club that even with such a weakened team the fixture was fulfilled. There should be a stronger team available for the return home match on Sunday.  Hopefully, more details to follow.

23 Nov 08 Narrow defeat for Caledonia

Most of the existing pages and content will be retained. Almost certainly there will be glitches. Please let me know of broken links etc. once you've had a chance to try it out. George

Defeat For DWPC

DWPC lost their match tonight against Warrender/Portobello.  They were beaten 10-11.  Warrender/Portobello fielded an older and physically stronger team than DWPC, who were two key players missing tonight.  Due to the short notice given to the Director of Technical Officials, there was only one match referee.  DWPC now have to await the results of the final two matches to see who will win the league.  Goal scorers:  J Hinley 1, D Campbell 1, Z Thomson 1, P Metcalfe 2, R Tate 3, J Wood 1, A Woodall 1

One set will be used at HMS Caledonia with the other set used at Cowdenbeath.  When the Carnegie Centre re-opens both sets will be relocated there.  These goals will assist us in continuing our Junior development programme over the next few difficult years.

Monday : 8pm - 8.50pm at Rosyth - all squads
Thursday : 9pm - 10pm at Cowdenbeath - Junior & Senior squads
Saturday : 5.30pm - 7.30pm at either Stirling or Kirkcaldy - Junior &
Senior.

The above will be discussed at the AGM.

Easy Win For DWPC 1987 and Later

DWPC beat Menzieshill Whitehall tonight 39-2 (13-0, 11-0, 10-0, 5-2).  All players had a good amount of water time.  In fact, at one point , we had our Under 16 team in the water.  All players managed to get on the score sheet except Simon, who was playing out field tonight.  Obviously his brain won't let him put the ball in the net as he is so used to having to stop them going in!!  Unfortunately, the match was marred by an incident which led to a player from each team being "wrapped" for brutality.

Goal Scorers:  A Woodall 9, Z Thomson 6, D Campbell 6, C Campbell 5, P Metcalfe 4, E Storrar 2, J Wood 2, R Tate 2, N Comerford 2, A Melville 1

GB NATIONAL ACADEMY SQUAD
==========================
Good luck to club members Nicola Tate, Darren Campbell, Christopher Campbell & Jake Hinley, who are attending three day GB National Academy camps at the RAF Base at St Athans near Cardiff. Unfortunately the camps run into term time (Scottish not English) and the Players have had to request time off school to take-up the invitation.

Unfortunately, due to Prelims, Zach Thomson was unable to take-up an invitation to attend, Logan Shepherd of Menzieshill and DWPC has however accepted an invitation to attend.

Brian Campbell will also be attending having been invited to be a support coach to the Boys GB National Academy Squad.

TRAINING SESSION - CHANGES
=========================
Members are reminded that the session tomorrow night (28 October) will be the last session at the Carnegie Centre on a Tuesday evening. With the closure of the Centre at the end of the year this session has been switched to Rosyth on Monday evenings from 8pm - 8.50pm. Members are also reminded that a pass is required to gain entry to the base. We recently asked both Carnegie and InCAS if they would give-up 30 minutes of their existing time to allow us to commence from 7.30pm, whilst InCAS were happy to assist unfortunately Carnegie were not.

Following our unsuccessful attempt to hire regular pool time at Stirling University on Saturday evenings from 5.30pm for our Junior & Senior squads, we have asked Richard Gordon of Scottish Swimming to discuss the question of access to this pool for Water polo half pool hires with the Management, we hope progress will be made this week. There are few options available to us for this group of players and access to the large pool at Stirling on a regular basis is considered to be the best option for us.

We currently await a response from Fife Leisure Trust on our request for pool time at Cowdenbeath for our younger squads.

SWPC ANNUAL MEETING OF CLUBS
=============================
Senior members are encouraged to attend this meeting which will be held on Thursday 6 November 2008 from 7pm. This is an opportunity for views to be expressed for the next year and the opportunity should be taken. Nick Hume will also be present and he will report on GB plans.

To encourage attendance we have postponed the Senior National League match with Warrender which was scheduled to take place that evening.  (It has been proposed to reschedule this match for 20th November.  An answer is awaited.)

CLUB AGM
=========
7.30pm on Tuesday 4 November 2008 - Members and parents of Junior members are encouraged to attend and contribute to the direction of the Club.

If we want the Club to continue to improve then administrative support from members is required, with key positions falling vacant the Club stands at a crossroads.

The first issue at the AGM will be find a member to chair the meeting - a volunteer is urgently required (preferably prior to the meeting) to enable the secretary to brief them beforehand. If no-one steps forward the meeting will not be able to progress beyond item 1 on the Agenda !!

DWPC 1995+ Make a strong start but lose third game

Scorers: Harry Hewitt 4, Daniel Woodall 3, Sandy Norman 2, Luke Thomson 1, Scott Wilson 1

Team also beat Durham 5-2.
Scorers: Luke Thomson 2, Harry Hewitt 2, Daniel Woodall 1

The 1995 played Carlisle and were beaten 8-1 by the much stronger and physically larger team. The only goal was scored by team captain Alexander Johnstone.
Iain Thomson  remarked that 'they could have played them all day and still not get much further'. The team played well despite this being their first tournament together and can come home proud of themselves but also with plenty to work on.  However its not over yet! The team have one last game in the 3rd/4th play off against Durham who they beat earlier 5-2. The final will be played between Sedgefield and Carlisle- in a game which will be very close. Iain also said that the team would not have beaten Sedgefield had they been drawn against them in the semi-final instead of Carlisle.

DWPC have now played their 3rd/4th playoff and have beaten Durham 6-1, finishing a very respectable 3rd in their first tournament.  In the words of Zach "things look bright for the 95s!"

Goal Scorers: Alexander Johnstone 1, Scott Wilson 2, Daniel Woodall 2, Harry Hewitt 2.

Members wishing to add News / results / match reports etc should provide the information to the Webmaster as early as possible - if no information is provided nothing will be published !!!

SESSIONS
========
Members are reminded that the last Tuesday session at the Carnegie Centre will take place on Tuesday 28 October 2008. Members are also reminded of the application process to obtain a pass for HMS Caledonia with over 18's requiring to undergo a 'Disclosure Scotland' check which takes some weeks to conclude.

Session times and Venues after the Carnegie Centre closes have not yet been finalised. The last Club session of 2008 will be on Sunday 21 December.

From 2009 we hope to have time at Cowdenbeath on Sunday evenings and the Monday session at HMS Caledonia will continue (subject to attendance improving), unfortunately our request to extend this 50min session by 30mins has not yet been successful - InCAS were willing to give-up 30 mins from their session but Carnegie were not.

Our attempt to hire half the pool at Stirling University as a base for our Junior / Senior players has run into problems, apparently to do so we need to have the boom in place therefore the only available slots to us are on Saturday afternoons however both slots are currently booked heavily by Swimming clubs.
These Saturday slots are in any case not suitable for us, our preferred slot was from 5.30pm - 7.30pm which is not a 'busy' slot and we had identified seventeen slots to the Summer which are free however despite the fact that no-one else would probably be in the pool at the same time the management at the pool insist that the boom should be in place and they will not move it
at that time of day, similarly they do not move the boom centrally on a Sunday at all.  They would be happy to hire the whole pool to us however it would then be too expensive for the Club to take this on. We have asked Scottish Swimming to look into this unfortunate state of affairs.

AGM
====
The AGM will take place on Tuesday 4th November from 7.30pm at the Carnegie Centre. All members and Parents of Junior members are urged to attend a give their views.

Unfortunately my commitments (as I intimated at last year's AGM) including Club & RTC coaching, taking the boys to their GB squad sessions etc, has eaten into what time I have available and has led me to take the difficult decision to stand down as Secretary at the AGM, a new Secretary will therefore be required from the AGM. I shall of course be available to assist the new Secretary during the transition phase and will complete all matters relating to the AGM. Members are reminded that without a Secretary the Club cannot function.

A Member to chair the AGM is also required, without a chair the meeting will not progress.

Visit of Nick Hume

The following has been received from Ken Fussell:

Nick Hume the GB National Performance Director will be attending our Annual Meeting of Clubs at Stirling on Thursday 6th November to talk about his thoughts on Performance and Legacy programmes.
I would like to compile a number of questions to pass onto Nick before he comes up.
If you have any question for Nick please send it along to me by Tuesday 28th October so I can put them together.
This will help to ensure we all don't ask the same question and will allow me to put them into some sort of order.
We will run the Annual Meeting first then Nick to follow.
As you will know the Meeting date has been set since the start of the year and will follow the usual agenda items.
I'll get the call for nominations for SWPC positions out very soon.
If anyone has any extra item for the General Meeting let me know as soon as possible.
Otherwise I anticipate we will get through the Meeting promptly allowing more time for us to talk to Nick.

Note from Brian Campbell - this meeting clashes with the Senior DWPC v Warrender SNL match.  Should the match be postponed?

15 Oct 08 Portobello setting the pace in senior men's Scottish National League
Portobello may be struggling in the NWPL 1st Division but continue to show dominance over Scottish opposition. A home victory , 18-3, over Edinburgh Unversity was followed by a 20-7 away win at Warrender. Newcomers Edinburgh University were surprise conquerors of Warrender, 11-9. Dunfermline and Portobello  don't meet until the end of November.
12 Oct 08 Win at last for Portobello
The Edinburgh side overcame fellow strugglers, Polytechnic, 12-11 in this weekend's NWPL 1st Div. matches. However, in another tight game, they lost 13-15 to Cheltenham. In their third game they went down 5-15 to Welsh Wanderers. Only Polytechnic are below Portobello in the League after 9 games.
Former Dunfermline and Portobello player, Bruce Elder, scored a late winner for West London Penguin over Rotherham. This clinched a Top Five place for Penguin and dropped Cheltenham into the lower tier. Lancaster, Bristol Central City of Manchester and Rotherham are also in the Top Five for the Div. 1 split along with GB Juniors.
10 Oct 08 No place for Scots teams in ASA Club Senior Championships
ASA TWPC announces that the ASA Club Senior Championships for men and women will return in 2009 but as a Regional competition for teams representing the 8 English Districts.
The ASA Club Senior Championship for men has been held since 1888 and the magnificent  Ravensbourne Trophy has been brought to Scotland 5 times, twice by Motherwell (1949, 1950), twice by Dunfermline (1992, 1993) and once by Portobello (1997).

p.s. Brian Campbell has heard from Ken Fussell that discussions are ongoing which may result in places for Welsh and Scottish representatives.
10 Oct 08 Sunday Session Restored
The under 21 match vs Warrender planned for Sunday 12 October 2008 has been cancelled as Warrender do not have a team.

Press Release

The following has been sent to the local press:

GB Success
Four young DWPC players have been selected for the GB National Academy Water Polo Squads. Jake Hinley, Chris and Darren Campbell all 14 are in the 28 player boys' squad. Nicola Tate, also 14, is in the 26 player girls' squad. All four youngsters made it through the recent squad cuts which saw the numbers cut in half.
Darren and Chris are two of twenty four outfield players and Jake one of four goalkeepers. The squad will hold regular training sessions in Walsall which all team members will have to attend.
Nicola is one of twenty two outfield players in the girls' squad which meets together once a month in Manchester. Both squads will now have a year to prepare before they are scheduled to play international matches.
Fellow DWPC player Andrew Woodall (17) is part of the GB junior men's team. He has recently returned from Bulgaria where he took part in the European Qualifiers, scoring 4 goals.
These selections are the first indicator of how well DWPC's junior development is working. The club currently have a large squad of junior player's attending regular training sessions at Carnegie leisure centre and it is hoped that the stars of the future will be amongst this number.  Photo

2 Oct 08

Comen Cup

GB have won their opening match in the Comen Cup.  We have received a report on the days play from Iain Melville, who is on business in Malta:

Team GB ran out winners 10-9 finally against well organised French Club side. The GB guys started well and were ahead 6-1 after the 1st quarter but then were beaten in the next 2 very keenly contested quarters to go into the final quarter only 8-7 ahead. It was a slower game than we are used to seeing with our teams, but much more strength orientated in the 30m length pitch. GB however fielded a relatively young team with around half the squad recent GB juniors.

The following game was Malta v Switzerland which the Maltese won with a very controlled performance. The Maltese played a faster more open game than the GB & French teams had done with stronger defending further up the pool.

The Annual General meeting of the Club will be held at 7.30pm in Room 2 at the Carnegie Centre on Tuesday 4 November 2008. Proposals for changes to the Constitution must be with the Secretary by 14 October 2008 and proposals for changes to the rules by 21 October 2008.
All Members and parents of our Junior (u/16) members are invited to attend, contribute to the meeting and make their views known.
Over the past few years attendance has been poor, if you wish the Club to progress everyone has to take responsibility for the management of the Club, winning in the water is only a part of being a successful Club.
Without a President a volunteer is required to chair the AGM, please advise the secretary should you wish to volunteer. You will also note that a number of positions remain vacant and you should consider whether you can help out by taking on one of the posts. If the post remains vacant after the AGM it is likely that the activity associated with that post will not be undertaken.

From Brian Campbell:  Unfortunately my commitments (as I intimated at last year's AGM) including Club & RTC coaching, taking the boys to their GB squad sessions etc, has eaten into what time I have available and has led me to take the difficult decision to stand down as Secretary at the AGM, a new Secretary will therefore be required from the AGM. Many Thanks

01 July 08 East District development league

The East District development league has drawn to a conclusion with the winners being the younger members of the club who have received a number of matches that they wouldn't normally have got.  The winning team of the league was the InCAS team which was made up not just of InCAS swimmers but mostly by DWPC players and was a 2nd DWPC team.

This league has allowed a number of different people to become involved in the sport by doing different jobs.  The main one being Andrew Woodall who made his coaching debut with the InCAS team, but there was also a return to water polo refereeing for Jack Donaldson who helped out with the refereeing of most of the matches throughout the season.

A big thank you also to all the table officials and helpers that have meant the matches were able to go ahead without any technical problems and with a fully working scoreboard, so a big thank you to Jeanette Metcalfe and Mike Tate who provided the expertise for almost all of the matches.

Under 14's Triumph in Cup Final

Dunfermline won the 2007 under 14 Scottish Cup defeating Warrender 23-9.

Dunfermline fielded a mixed ability team with seven from the British under 16 Cup winning side complemented by some of the players who will make up the next team at this age.

Dunfermline started the first quarter with the strongest players on the bench as the opportunity was taken to give the new players experience. Against a bigger and stronger side Dunfermline's youngsters defended well losing only four goals before the strongest players were brought into action midway through the quarter as planned. Within seconds Captain Darren Campbell scored the first of his ten goals as Dunfermline increased the pace and came back into the match to take the first quarter 6-5.

The strongest line-up continued into the second quarter dominating their opponents winning it 7-1 to lead 13-6 at half-time.

Goalkeeper Jake Hinley was brought outfield to play the final two quarters as Dunfermline started to rotate their players and control the match. The third quarter was drawn 2-2 as Warrender defended well to leave Dunfermline
15-8 ahead going into the final quarter.

In the final quarter Dunfermline pushed home their advantage against a tiring Warrender side winning it 8-1 whilst continuing to rotate all their players.

Coach Brian Campbell was delighted with the performance of the younger players many of whom have improved this season through competing in the District development league.

Seven of the team go forward play in the under 16 Scottish Cup final against Menzieshill which will be played at the Carnegie Centre at 9pm on Tuesday 10 June 2008.

01 Jun 08 Dunfermline Win under21 Scottish Cup

Dunfermline defeated Warrender in the delayed 2007 Scottish Cup final by 13-8 which was played at the Edinburgh University pool.

Fielding eight of their u/16 British Cup winning side and with Alasdair Campbell having returned from University in the USA, Dunfermline had an exciting mix of youth and experience for this Final against favourites Warrender.

Christopher Campbell struck first blood early in the first quarter with a well taken breakaway goal before Warrender equalised. Dunfermline then scored three goals in quick succession from Darren & Alasdair Campbell and a second from Christopher Campbell with a well taken lob to take Dunfermline into a 4-1 lead. Warrender pulled a goal back before further goals from Darren & Alasdair Campbell again on the break took Dunfermline into a 6-2 lead at the end of an excellent first period where Dunfermline's strong counter attacking play and drop-off defence was proving to be very successful.

Into the 2nd quarter with a four goal lead Coach Brian Campbell started to rotate his players to keep the team fresh for the remainder of what was expected to be a physical game. Two further goals from Christopher Campbell and a long shot from Captain Paul Metcalfe were cancelled out by two goals from Warrender to give Dunfermline a deserved 8-4 lead at half-time.

Warrender tried to come back into the match in the third quarter however Dunfermline maintained the gap with two goals each from Zach Thomson and Alasdair Campbell cancelling out four goals from Warrender to leave
Dunfermline still with a comfortable four goal cushion at 12-8.

An early strike from Darren Campbell in the final quarter following a long break saw the introduction of all of the younger players to replace the starting line-out who were given a well earned rest. The performance of our
younger players during the final quarter was superb with no further goals being scored following great defensive play from all of the players.

On the final whistle Captain Paul Metcalfe led a standing ovation from the starting players for a superb final quarter effort by our younger players as Dunfermline won the Cup 13-8.

Goalkeeper Simon Metcalfe had an excellent match and distributed the ball with accuracy whilst Junior goalkeeper Jake Hinley was used as an outfield player.

GB Youth internationalist Andrew Woodall was used in a man marking role against Warrender's main attacking threat and played with great discipline to minimise the threat to the team.

Captain Paul Metcalfe was delighted with the performance of the whole team and thanked all the players for their effort.

Some of the younger players now go forward with confidence to play Warrender in the u/14 Scottish Cup final next week.

Scorers : Alasdair Campbell 5, Christopher Campbell 3, Darren Campbell & Zach Thomson 2 each and Paul Metcalfe 1.

Dunfermline -
Simon Metcalfe, Paul Metcalfe, Alasdair Campbell, Robert Tate, Andrew Woodall, Darren Campbell, Christopher Campbell, Zach Thomson, Jordan Wood, Andrew Melville, Craig Wilkinson, Joe Thomson & Jake Hinley.

Selection Policy
================
Queries have been raised by certain members regarding the selection of the U/21 team. The squad was drawn from Club members on merit with no non-members considered for selection. I have no intention of bringing in non-members for Scottish matches (irrespective of how good they are) and displacing our younger, developing, players, we are trying to build a DWPC squad for the future and that long term aim overrides any short term gains,
we will win or lose with the players the Club has.

The duty of the Club Officers and its coaches are to look after the members of the Club (especially the younger players as far as I am concerned) in the first instance and this I will continue to do when selecting teams. The player in question (whom certain members queried why he was not selected) was not and is not a Member of the Club and was not therefore considered, contrary to comments being expressed the player in question has not been
'prevented' from joining the Club by myself and is free to become a member on the payment of the appropriate fees, to date he has not chosen not to do so.

As a rule a minimum number of Associate members have been brought in for ASA matches only where we have insufficient members of the appropriate standard.

Any member who disagrees with or who wishes to change this policy should submit their complaint / proposal to the Committee and/or AGM for due consideration by the members.

18 May 08 East District development league

The Development league match at 9pm on Tuesday 21 May with Warrender has been cancelled as Warrender cannot raise a team.

It is too late to cancel the pool booking therefore older Junior & Senior players are invited to come along for a 'bounce' match.

18 May 08 HMS Caledonia Training Cancelled

Due to the unfortunate news about Keith Falconer breaking his leg there will be no training tomorrow night at HMS Caledonia.  Training should resume as normal next week.

02 May 08 ASA Cup press report

Dunfermline's 15 & under team won the British Academy Cup defeating Manchester 13-12 in the final which was held at the Manchester Aquatics centre, becoming the first Scottish team to win the trophy. The win followed four years of planning where our team have played in previous campaigns underage to gain valuable experience.

Having defeated Sutton & Cheam 15-2 earlier in the semi-final with an commanding performance Dunfermline went into the final expecting a very difficult match which it exactly what it proved to be.

Scorers in the semi-final : Christopher Campbell 7, Darren Campbell 3, Jordan Wood, Zach Thomson 2 each & Logan Shepherd 1

The final started well for Dunfermline as they won the first quarter 6-4 with 4 goals from Darren Campbell on the counter attack and a goal each from Zach Thomson & Christopher Campbell.

The excellent play continued into the second quarter with a further 2 goals from Darren Campbell and again a goal each from Zach Thomson & Christopher Campbell as Dunfermline won the quarter 3-2 to take a 9-6 lead into the
second half. Unfortunately forward Jordan Wood suffered cramp late in this quarter which limited Dunfermline's attacking options for the remainder of the match.

The third quarter was tied at 3-3 with one goal each from Darren Campbell, Christopher Campbell and Zach Thomson as the match slowed down from the early high tempo and the tension mounted.

Starting the final quarter 12-9 ahead and with Jordan Wood, having partly recovered, returning to play in a defensive role, the Dunfermline team ran down the clock well using their possession time to the maximum. Chances were missed by both sides and Manchester edged back into the game to close to 12-11 before Christopher Campbell scored what turned-out to be the winner with a counter attacking goal. Manchester struck back to take the match into the final minute only one goal behind. A Dunfermline player was excluded for 20 seconds with only 30 seconds to go which presented Manchester with a chance to equalise however Dunfermline's 'man down' defence stood firm
pressurising Manchester's player to hit the post, a decisive time-out was immediately called as Dunfermline recovered possession which allowed Captain Zach Thomson to run down the clock when the match was restarted and
Dunfermline were the Champions.

Goalkeeper Jake Hinley returned to form in both games making many good saves and providing accurate long passes to support the counter attacking style of play which Dunfermline adopted to utilise the speed of Darren & Christopher Campbell. Captain Zach Thomson marshalled the defence well against some good Manchester forwards and all the Dunfermline players worked extremely hard to limit the chances which Manchester had to a minimum.

Dunfermline Coach Brian Campbell praised his young team and paid tribute to the hard work put in by the players over the past four years to reach their current high standard. Winning a British competition given the superior
set-up in England is a major achievement for a Scottish Club and this team now join the Club's Senior team who won the British Senior Cup in 1992 & 1993.

Coach Campbell also paid tribute to all those who have supported the Club's various junior development initiatives over the previous six years including the local Sports Council and the Carnegie Trust, he is certain that without
such assistance the players would not have reached their current high standards.

Scorers in the final : Darren Campbell 6, Christopher Campbell 4 & Zach Thomson 3.

With InCAS having recently started-up a water polo team and the current proposals to provide an all deep pool at the Carnegie Centre the future for local water polo is looking healthy. The Club hope that other swimmers / clubs will introduce water polo to both provide an alternative activity for their young swimmers, and also to act as a retention tool for the high percentage of members who normally 'retire' at around 13-15 years of age.

02 Apr 08 EX member appointed Olympic referee

Brian Littlejohn has received the long-awaited invitation from FINA to be a Water Polo Referee at the Olympic Games in August. Below is an extract from this invitation which he received on Friday.

I have expressed a resounding "Congratulations" to Brian from all his friends in Scotland.

23 Feb 08 Womens Olympic Qualifying

2004 silver medallist Greece has taken the last of only eight Olympic berths. Head coach Kyrakios Iosfidios´ beat Canada in the second cross-over game of the Women´s FINA Olympic Games Qualification Tournament in Imperia, Italy in low-scoring game 5-2 (1-0, 2-0, 0-1, 2-1), when three goals by Kyriaki Liosi of ANC Glyfada made the final difference between both teams in a real battle of attrition. GB Junior Squad

=============

Following a selection weekend in Wales, congratulations go to Andrew Woodall in making the final squad for the GB Junior squad which will be competing in the European Qualifiers and hopefully finals over the next two years. Andrew is joined by Lewis Don of Menzieshill.

Training Match

============

Lancaster brought a strong 1993+ squad to visit the Club on Sunday 17 February and take part in a 3 hour training match where we played sixteen quarters in total.

The agreed format saw alternating two quarters of the strongest boys teams followed by two quarters with the girls augmented by some boys players. Matches were very competitive and have helped each Club prepare for the forthcoming ASA Cup campaign, the draw for which is anticipated to be issued soon.

Our thanks go to Lancaster for their attendance, to all the players for their superb effort throughout the session and to those who helped out with the refereeing, on the table and with the post match hospitality.

14 Feb 08 ED Development League

Dunfermline defeated Warrender in the first match of the East District Development League on Tuesday night.  Dunfermline raced into a 9-2 lead by the end of the first period.  Warrender came back strongly in the 2nd quarter with the majority of the Dunfermline team made up of younger less experienced players.  At half time Dunfermline had lost the 7 goal advantage and were leading by 12-11.  The third period could of been decisive with Warrender taking the lead for the first time during the match until Dunfermline put in the older players to try and rescue the match.  With Dunfermline trailing going into the final quarter they started with the first 7 and they managed to rescue the game and the victory winning the final quarter 9-3 to win the match 26-21.

This match was closer than the score suggests with Warrender coming back strongly in the 2nd quarter, shooting into stand in goalkeeper Alexander Crawford who was playing his first game in goals.  A strong period in the 4th quarter rescued the result.

Team: A Crawford, Z Thomson, A Johnstone, C Wilkinson, A Melville, J Thomson, L Thomson, J Wood, H Hewitt, J Pulham, C Ironside, L Rodger, J Cormack

Scorers: J Wood 8, A Johnstone 5, Z Thomson 3, A Melville 3, J Thomson 2, L Thomson 2, H Hewitt 2, A Crawford 1

Club Anniversary Dinner Cancelled

Message from Julia MacKay:

Due to unforeseen circumstances, ie the lack of interest from players and families the 25th anniversary dinner has to be cancelled. This is a great disappointment, as this was going to be a celebration of the clubs success.

I would like to thank all the members that were interested. I did try.

In the second warm-up match InCAS recorded their second win over DWPC winning 7-6 in another closely fought match. Behind 5-3 starting the final quarter DWPC closed the gap and just failed to catch InCAS missing a chance
with five seconds to go. All players are to be congratulated for the effort they again put into the match and an improvement was noted from last week's match.

Jack Donaldson returned to refereeing after many years away and, after having received a rules update before the game, had a very good match accompanied by Paul Metcalfe. The timing system was again operational and thanks go to all who manned it - the players really benefit when the clocks are on.

The final match in this warm-up series is next week and with the fixtures for the Development league due for publication shortly, the next few months promise to be a busy time for our young players.

Message From Callum Macgregor

Team Caledonia have received designs from Turbo for both the men’s and ladies teams (trunks, costumes, towels, caps, bathrobes, T Shirts).  They are available to see on the Warrender website.  It would be good to get all Caley players feedback on the designs so we can decide what to order.

In the first of three warm-up matches for the ED Development League InCAS defeated DWPC 12-9 in an excellent match.

For many of our younger players (and new coaches as well) this was their first 'real' match and all performed very well. Special mention to new boy from InCAS Donald (Pingu) Griffiths who played in the shallow end goals and saved a penalty !

New volunteers also stepped forward to man the table which does make such a difference for the players.

The second match will be played next Tuesday evening at 9pm and Parents / friends are invited to come along and support the youngsters and/or help-out on the table (no experience needed!).

Helping out with the refereeing next week will be life member Jack Donaldson (Big Al's Dad) as he returns to the pool-side after an absence of many many years.

Menzieshill have confirmed that they will be entering the league which is excellent news for the youngsters who now face many exiting matches over the months ahead as each team will play each other home and away twice.
